Tobias Staheli
Designer and Maker of Fine Timber Furniture
Originally from Switzerland where he studied furniture making, Tobias moved to Adelaide to work in 2005. He travelled extensively in the years following his arrival and was greatly inspired by the vast beauty of the Australian landscape.
Prior to establishing his company spatialExpressions, Tobias worked for renowned furniture designer Khai Liew.
Tobias now calls Adelaide home and the last decade has been a time of great professional and personal development. Migrating to a new culture, travelling in Southeast Asia, and teaching English in Mongolia have greatly influenced Tobias’ work and inspired him to integrate strong, natural eco elements into his creative designs.
Recently Tobias has been invited to participate in a number of exciting furniture and custom designed fit-out projects including Longitude 131, the luxury lodge at Uluru. He was also commissioned to undertake a community art project for Onkaparinga Council.
Tobias’s beautifully designed functional furniture is complemented by his work as a creative artist. The focus of his art practice has been the creation of fictional plants and animals including The Family (2012) and a series of works entitled From Little Things Big Leaves Grow (2016). These creations, and the projects that he is currently working on, are informed by his interest in the natural and human sciences. The works borrow elements from scientific knowledge but also express, through abstraction of shape, a critical view of how some cultures have adopted a seemingly dogmatic adherence to science which may obscure the power of ones own experience and action.
If you would like to own a beautiful piece of furniture or if you have an interior project that needs a custom designed fit-out, or an interest in acquiring a beautiful art work, give Tobias a call to talk about it.
